10 Best Locations for a Maternity Photoshoot in Los Angeles

10 Best Locations for a Maternity Photoshoot in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is full of beautiful contrasts. One minute you’re standing under a row of swaying palm trees, and the next you’re surrounded by sleek architecture or staring out over the ocean from a cliff. You’ve got sun-drenched beaches, glowing sunsets, peaceful hiking trails, cozy photo spots tucked between city buildings, and quiet gardens hidden behind iconic landmarks. There are so many incredible places to shoot, it’s no wonder LA has become one of the most popular cities in the world for maternity photoshoots.

As a maternity photographer based in Beverly Hills for over 12 years, I’ve spent most of my time inside my studio, capturing quiet, intimate moments for expectant moms. It’s calm, private, and beautifully styled, and many families prefer that controlled environment. But for others, there’s something really special about stepping outside and embracing the wildness and energy of this amazing city.

Even though I work in-studio, I’ve had countless conversations with clients who ask, “Where’s the best place to take photos outside?” So I put together this list, a guide to the best maternity photoshoot locations in Los Angeles. Whether you’re dreaming of a peaceful beach photo at El Matador Beach in Malibu, a soft golden-hour shot under the arches at Pasadena City Hall, or a powerful silhouette with a full view of the city from Griffith Observatory, this list has you covered.

And if you’re looking for something quieter, more nature-filled, or less crowded, places like Malibu Creek State Park or the Santa Monica Mountains offer a relaxed escape that still keeps you within Los Angeles County.

El Matador State Beach, Malibu

This beach in Malibu is hands down one of the most breathtaking spots in all of Los Angeles County. It’s got those moody, cinematic cliffs, sea caves, and giant rock formations that jut straight out of the water, and when the tide is low, you can walk between them and get the most unreal light reflecting off the wet sand. It feels wild and peaceful all at once.

I always suggest coming here during golden hour, just before sunset, when the light hits those rocks and makes everything glow. But you’ve got to plan for tides. This isn’t a beach you want to visit at high tide, the water crashes up right to the base of the cliffs, and you’ll barely have space to stand. Bring flat shoes for the steep staircase and a second set of clothes if you’re planning to walk into the water, which I highly recommend!

There are no changing rooms here, so plan ahead. You can wear a comfy outfit on the way down and then change into a gown in the car or under a wrap.

Where to park: There’s a small paid lot directly at the El Matador entrance, off Pacific Coast Highway, it fills up fast, especially on weekends, so I always recommend coming on a weekday. If it’s full, there’s limited free street parking along PCH, but be very careful walking along the highway because there’s no sidewalk.

Best restaurant in the area: The Sunset Restaurant on Westward Beach Road. Beachfront views, cozy candlelit booths, and lobster tacos. It’s a local favorite, and perfect for a little post-shoot celebration.

Venice Beach & Venice Canals

Venice is such a vibe. It’s loud, colorful, sometimes chaotic, and always photogenic. What I love about shooting here is how you can get a mix of beachy boho, artsy grit, and soft, romantic canal views, all within walking distance of each other. You could start your session with murals on Abbot Kinney, dip into the canals for quiet garden bridges, and finish with sunset on the sand, all without moving your car.

The Venice Canals are often overlooked, but they’re one of the best photo locations in all of LA. Picture little white footbridges, water reflections, ducks gliding past, and lush green bougainvillea spilling over the fences. It’s peaceful and totally unexpected, especially if you’ve just walked off the boardwalk.

If you’re shy about crowds or just want a calmer session, avoid weekends or go early on weekday mornings. And don’t wear stilettos, you’ll be walking a lot, and some of the pathways are cobblestone or sandy.

Where to park: Free 2-hour parking can usually be found along Dell Avenue or Court D. It’s a short walk to the canals. You can also use the Rose Avenue municipal lot if you’re planning to swing by the beach after.

Best restaurant in the area: Great White on Pacific Avenue. Everything here is fresh and California-cool, locals rave about the fish tacos and breakfast burritos. Also, it opens early, so it’s perfect for a morning shoot followed by brunch.

Santa Monica Pier & Santa Monica Beach

Santa Monica Pier is one of those places that looks like a movie set because, well… it kind of is. It’s the perfect mix of nostalgic, colorful, and coastal. You’ve got the glowing Ferris wheel, the wooden boardwalk, cotton-candy skies at sunset, and of course, Santa Monica Beach just steps away. This location gives you that instantly recognizable LA vibe, it’s upbeat, fun, and surprisingly romantic when timed right.

That said, it can also get extremely crowded, especially on weekends. If you’re planning a maternity shoot here, I always tell clients to go early or go on a weekday. Evenings during the week give you the best light and way fewer people. If you’re going for a whimsical, more playful look, maybe barefoot in the sand with your partner holding your hand and laughing near the water, this place works beautifully.

Try to schedule the shoot so that golden hour hits just before the Ferris wheel lights start to turn on, that blue hour light with the warm bulbs is something special.

Also, I’d skip trying to shoot on the actual pier during sunset, too many people, too little space. The better move is to head down to the sand, set up closer to Lifeguard Tower 18 (less crowded), and angle your shot so the pier glows in the background while the ocean waves keep everything soft and dreamy.

Where to park: The best option is Parking Structure 8 at 2nd & Colorado, close to the pier, affordable, and usually easy to find a spot. You can also use Lot 1 North right next to the beach, but it gets packed quickly. If you’re coming on a weekday, you’ll have more flexibility, but avoid Friday afternoons, traffic becomes its own beast.

Best restaurant in the area: Ivy at the Shore, it’s beautiful, iconic, and beachy without being stuffy. The atmosphere is bright and celebratory, and their pink décor is an Instagram favorite.

Griffith Observatory & Griffith Park

If you want a maternity photo that screams Los Angeles, this is your place. Perched high above the city, Griffith Observatory offers sweeping views of Downtown LA, the Hollywood Sign, and, on clear days, even the ocean way off in the distance. The building itself is a stunning backdrop: white stone, art deco details, arched windows, and those distinctive domes. But what really makes it magical is the light.

The sun sets behind the Observatory when you’re facing west, which creates this unbelievable glow around everything. You get that halo effect, especially if you position mama in front of one of the archways. And if you wait just a few minutes after the sun dips below the skyline, the whole sky goes lavender and peach. It’s dreamy.

Now, it’s also not the easiest spot logistically. Griffith gets very busy, and parking near the Observatory can be a nightmare if you time it wrong. But I’ve done this so many times that I’ve found a workaround, skip the Observatory parking lot completely and instead park along Western Canyon Road just before sunset. You’ll walk up a little bit, but it’s worth avoiding the traffic circle chaos. It’s also a quieter area to change outfits or take a breath.

Also, it gets windy up there. Bring a light wrap for warmth between shots, and if you’re wearing a long dress, embrace the wind! It can make the photos feel so alive.

Where to park: Park along Western Canyon Road, there’s free parking, and it’s usually more available than the lots at the top. From there, it’s about a 10-minute walk to the Observatory. If you’re doing a sunrise shoot, you may even find a spot right at the top, just get there early.

Best restaurant in the area: The Trails Café, it’s a little rustic gem tucked into the lower part of Griffith Park. If you’re doing a morning shoot, grab one of their famous scones or an avocado sandwich. It’s the kind of place where locals hang out after a hike with a coffee and a book, and the shaded picnic tables are perfect for relaxing after being on your feet.

Pasadena City Hall & San Marino

There’s something about Pasadena City Hall that feels like you’ve stepped into a European plaza, and for maternity photography, it’s an absolute dream. The architecture is this blend of Spanish Colonial Revival and Italian Renaissance, with soft arches, warm terracotta tiles, and creamy stone that reflects light beautifully. If you want a clean, classic, timeless look, this place delivers every time.

What I love most here is how versatile it is. You’ve got wide open courtyards for full-body shots, narrow arched hallways for dreamy, intimate portraits, and a grand dome that frames a mom-to-be like she’s in a movie. The light bounces so nicely in the late afternoon, especially under the arcades where the sun peeks through evenly spaced arches. And for those who love softness and symmetry, this is the place.

From Pasadena City Hall, it’s also an easy drive (less than 10 minutes) to San Marino, where you’ll find quieter garden corners that feel totally different, like you’ve traveled to a secret garden in another country. It’s worth pairing both in one session if you want some variety.

If you’re bringing older kids or pets, Pasadena is a family-friendly choice. The open plaza gives them room to run between shots, and the surrounding streets are calm, shaded, and gorgeous for bonus candids.

Where to park: The best option is metered street parking on Holly Street or Garfield Avenue, right by the building. It’s usually easy to find a spot during the week, and the meters take cards or mobile apps. If those are full, there’s a nearby garage on Ramona Street, just a 5-minute walk.

Best restaurant in the area: Alexander’s Steakhouse in Old Town Pasadena is elegant, cozy, and the food is incredible. If you’re celebrating after your shoot (which, you totally should), the wagyu sliders or truffle fries are next level.

Walt Disney Concert Hall Downtown LA

The first time I shot a maternity session at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, I remember the light hitting the steel like a mirror and thinking, this is going to be magic. And it was. The curved silver exterior reflects everything around it, turning an already beautiful mama into the centerpiece of an architectural masterpiece. It’s dramatic but clean, and it photographs like a dream.

This is one of those spots that works best early in the morning or on overcast days, the metallic panels bounce light in every direction, so soft, even light is your best friend here. It’s also one of the few spots where black gowns or bold colors look amazing. The contrast between a vibrant dress and the brushed silver panels adds a cool, fashion-forward vibe to maternity photos without feeling too trendy.

It’s a popular location for engagement shoots and wedding portraits, so weekdays are best. And while the main attraction is the outside of the concert hall, there’s a rooftop garden tucked away on the upper levels that’s quiet, lush, and often totally empty, perfect for a second look or a private moment with your partner.

The vibe here is definitely urban-chic, but it doesn’t feel cold. The shapes, reflections, and little green pockets around the building give you so much to work with, you just have to explore a bit.

Sample photo: A maternity shot with mama standing in front of one of the massive brushed steel curves, her colorful dress dramatically sweeping to one side in the breeze. The reflections create a subtle double image, and the lines of the building lead your eye right to her. It’s sleek, modern, and powerful.

Where to park: The best option is The Broad Museum Parking Garage (at 221 S. Grand Ave.). It’s right next to the Concert Hall and offers flat-rate evening and weekend parking, super easy. From there, it’s a short walk across the plaza. If you’re just popping in for a quick shoot, metered parking along 1st Street or Grand Avenue can work, but watch those time limits.

Best restaurant in the area: Redbird is one of the best-reviewed restaurants in all of Downtown LA. It’s tucked inside a historic cathedral-turned-dining space and offers modern American cuisine with serious style. Perfect for a fancy dinner after your shoot.

Rodeo Drive, The Beverly Hills Hotel & Beverly Gardens

If you want your maternity session to feel iconic, elegant, and straight out of a fashion editorial, Rodeo Drive is where it’s at. There’s something about those pristine palm-lined streets, the pastel storefronts, and the perfect sunshine that just screams Beverly Hills photo shoot. It’s polished without trying too hard. And the best part? You don’t need to be dressed like you’re walking into Chanel to get beautiful photos here, a flowing gown and natural smile are all you need.

The cobblestone alley of Two Rodeo Drive (yes, the one with the “little Europe” vibe) is a great place to start. There’s this curved staircase that’s almost always empty during the weekday mornings, and it gives you those soft, upscale textures, plus that dreamy, neutral backdrop. Then, you can walk a few blocks north to Beverly Gardens Park, where you get palm trees, open walking paths, and of course, the famous Beverly Hills sign. It’s classic and playful all at once.’

A short drive from there is the pink-and-palm-tree wonderland that is The Beverly Hills Hotel. Even if you don’t shoot directly on the property, just the sidewalk and entrance sign are amazing backdrops. The palm-lined entrance with its tropical greenery makes you feel like you’re in a Slim Aarons photo.

That said, a quick heads-up about shooting here. Rodeo Drive and The Beverly Hills Hotel are extremely sensitive about professional photography. You might get away with snapping a few casual shots before a security guard steps in to stop you, but if you’re planning a full session with a gown, lighting gear, or a photographer visibly working, it’s smart to look into getting a permit in advance. Beverly Hills takes image rights and commercial use seriously, even for personal shoots like maternity sessions. Beverly Gardens Park, on the other hand, is much more flexible and a great backup if you want to avoid interruptions.

Where to park: For Rodeo Drive, the Beverly Cañon Gardens Parking Garage (located at 241 N. Cañon Drive) is the best-kept secret. First two hours are free, and it’s a short stroll to the main shopping strip and the Beverly Hills sign. For The Beverly Hills Hotel, street parking on Sunset Boulevard is sometimes available, or you can valet if you’re dining there.

Best restaurant in the area: Il Pastaio, hands down, one of the best Italian restaurants in Beverly Hills. Locals and celebs eat here, but it still feels welcoming. The outdoor seating is perfect for people-watching after a morning session. The truffle pasta is ridiculous, in the best way.

Malibu Creek State Park

If I had to choose one outdoor location that really shows off Southern California’s rugged, golden beauty, Malibu Creek State Park would be it. Tucked in the Santa Monica Mountains, this spot feels like a world away from LA, wide open fields, hundred-year-old oak trees, rocky trails, and sunlight that makes everything feel cinematic.

This is a location for mamas who love nature and want something a little less polished. It’s great for boho-style dresses, earth tones, and barefoot-in-the-grass energy. In late summer, the grasses turn this honey-golden color that’s incredibly flattering for every skin tone. It glows at sunset. And in spring, you get wildflowers scattered across the fields like little bursts of color.

There’s a wooden footbridge that’s one of my favorite photo spots in all of Los Angeles County, it crosses over a dry creek bed and lines up with the hills perfectly behind it. It adds a bit of structure to the natural scene without pulling focus. There are also old film set ruins and stone walls that add some texture if you want a more styled look.

It’s peaceful out there, but bring water, bug spray, and plan for walking, this isn’t the kind of shoot where you pop out of the car and start shooting five feet away.

Where to park: There’s a $3 self-pay parking lot inside Malibu Creek State Park (off Las Virgenes Road), which is your best option. You can also find free shoulder parking on Las Virgenes, but it requires a bit more walking and it’s not always available. For ease, I recommend the paid lot, especially if you’re bringing wardrobe or little ones.

Best restaurant in the area: The Old Place, this hidden gem is just down Mulholland Highway, and it feels like stepping back in time. It’s a cozy wooden roadhouse known for its simple, soulful comfort food. Their brunch is legendary (get the baked eggs), and the coffee next door at Cornell Winery & Tasting Room makes it a full experience.

LACMA’s Urban Light & Miracle Mile

There’s just something about Urban Light at LACMA, those 202 antique streetlamps lined up in perfect rows are such a magnet for photographers. Whether it’s early morning with soft fog, midday with shadows dancing between the poles, or twilight when the lamps all turn on and the whole area glows, this location gives you instant visual drama. And for maternity photography, it’s got this mix of elegance and boldness that always comes through in the final shots.

Come here right after sunset, when the lamps are fully lit but there’s still a little color in the sky. You get this incredible, almost cinematic lighting. It’s timeless and totally LA.

The rest of Miracle Mile around LACMA is also full of opportunities, modern architecture, tree-lined sidewalks, and little grass patches that photograph beautifully. If you’re up for walking a bit, we can also grab a few frames in front of the Academy Museum, which has stunning glass walls and open staircases with some very cool lines.

This location is best for people who don’t mind a little foot traffic and are comfortable shooting in public. It’s not as quiet as the parks or beaches, but that urban energy is part of what makes it so unique.

Where to park: Use the Pritzker Garage (under the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures), it’s clean, well-lit, and has easy elevator access straight to the LACMA plaza. Metered parking is also available along Wilshire Boulevard, but read the signs carefully, ticket officers don’t play around here.

Best restaurant in the area: République, it’s one of the most beloved restaurants in the entire city. Set inside a beautiful old brick building, the vibe is warm and buzzing, and the food is next-level (their French toast and mushroom toast are especially amazing if you’re going in the daytime). It’s perfect for either a special post-shoot dinner or a long brunch on a weekday morning.

FAQ’s About Maternity Photoshoot Locations in Los Angeles

Planning a Los Angeles photoshoot can come with a lot of questions when you’re looking for the perfect spot, especially in a city as big and visually rich as Los Angeles. From hidden gardens to iconic photo spots, there are so many places to choose from depending on your style, comfort, and vision. Here are the most common questions I get from clients looking to take photos around LA and nearby areas.

Where can I find the most iconic Los Angeles photo spots for a maternity or engagement session?

If you’re after truly iconic Los Angeles photo spots, you can’t go wrong with locations like the Hollywood Sign, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and LACMA’s Urban Light installation near the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

For a cool, fashion-forward photo shoot in Los Angeles, these architectural backdrops offer clean lines and amazing light. If you’re planning a downtown LA photoshoot, combine Walt Disney Concert Hall with Grand Park or nearby rooftops for the best mix of city texture and skyline.

What are some romantic engagement locations around Los Angeles and Orange County?

Whether you’re planning engagement photos, a maternity session, or even an elopement, LA and Orange County offer romantic spots that feel like a movie set. In Los Angeles, I love the Venice Canals, Rodeo Drive, and Santa Monica Beach. If you’re looking farther south, Mission San Juan Capistrano is one of the most unique photography locations in Southern California. The Spanish architecture, archways, and gardens offer the perfect photoshoot location for couples who want old-world charm.

These areas also work well if you’re planning a wedding photography session or pre-wedding shoot, especially during golden hour. You’ll find both natural light and curated scenery to create a top photo every time.

What time of day is best for a beach photo shoot in Los Angeles?

For beach photo sessions, timing is everything. The best time is almost always sunset, also known as golden hour. Spots like El Matador Beach, Santa Monica Beach, and Venice Beach come alive when the sun starts to dip. The lighting is soft, the colors in the sky turn warm and dreamy, and the waves add movement and texture to your shots.

If you’re hoping for fewer crowds and cooler temps, sunrise is also magical, especially at locations like Dockweiler Beach or Leo Carrillo State Beach. The key is to choose a location with west-facing views so you get the best light on the water.

Is it possible to take maternity or engagement photos in downtown Los Angeles without it feeling too busy?

Yes! Downtown Los Angeles is mostly busybut there are ways to make it work for an intimate maternity or engagement session. Early mornings, especially on weekdays, are your best friend. Locations like the Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Broad, and surrounding streets in Los Angeles are practically empty before 9 a.m. and have the most beautiful morning light.

You’ll find photo opportunities with minimal distractions, and the clean city backdrop adds a modern edge to your shoot. Plus, the contrast of soft wardrobe styling (like gowns or floral crowns) against the sleek metal or glass creates a unique photo that feels very editorial.

Are there any hidden gem photo shoot locations in Los Angeles that aren’t as crowded?

Of course, while the top Los Angeles spots are popular for a reason, there are definitely unique locations that fly under the radar. A few of my favorite hidden gems include Franklin Canyon Park in Beverly Hills (peaceful trails, a duck pond, and hardly any crowds), Murphy Ranch Trail in Pacific Palisades and Plaza Las Fuentes near Pasadena City Hall.

These places in LA offer quiet, beautiful backdrops perfect for a photo session. They’re especially great for couples or families who want something low-key but still beautiful and meaningful.

Can I shoot both engagement photos and maternity photos in the same location?

Absolutely. Many photoshoot locations in Los Angeles are versatile enough to work for both engagement photography and maternity photo sessions. In fact, some of the best spots, like Griffith Observatory, Venice Beach, or LACMA, offer enough variety that you could shoot multiple looks in one place.

If you want to create a cohesive visual story between your engagement session and your maternity session later, try choosing favorite locations that feel personal, maybe where you had your first date, or a view you both love. That way, your images not only look good but also tell your story in a really meaningful way.

What’s the best photo location if I want a view of the entire city of Los Angeles?

If your dream is a sweeping view of the city, you’ve got some amazing options. The most famous is probably Griffith Observatory, which looks out over Downtown Los Angeles, the Hollywood Sign, and even the Pacific Ocean on clear days. It’s one of the top photo spots in LA, especially at sunset.

Another great option is the Mulholland Scenic Overlook, or even hiking up to Runyon Canyon if you’re feeling adventurous and want something more casual with a hiking trail feel.

Conclusion

Los Angeles is huge, diverse, and full of stunning photo locations, from beach cliffs to steel concert halls to mountain trails. Whether you’re after dramatic sunset light, soft palm tree reflections, or the quiet calm of a studio session, there’s something here for everyone.

If you’re overwhelmed, that’s totally normal. My advice is to go with what feels right for your energy. If you want easy, comfortable, calm and classic, a maternity studio photoshoot is perfect. If you’re dreaming of city glam, Rodeo or Urban Light are great. For nature lovers, El Matador or Malibu Creek will deliver.

And if you’re not sure? Reach out! I’m always happy to help talk through your vision and show you examples, of what we could create.
